Silicate Fibre Tapes, heat-resistant up to 1,200 °C

Composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and other metallic oxides such as aluminium, magnesium, calcium, etc., silicate fibre contains no toxic substances and is inorganic. It is an excellent alternative to ceramic fibre thanks to its great thermal and mechanical properties. Moreover, this fibre poses no health risk when handling with its diameter of 9 μm and can withstand high temperatures better than glass or basalt fibre.

Silicate fibre tapes have an excellent thermal resistivity and are suitable for high-temperature applications up to 1,200 °C in peak temperatures and up to 1,050 °C in operating temperatures. They also offer a great mechanical and chemical resistance. Silicate fibre tapes are mainly used in the industry for heat protections or for the insulation of cables and pipes.

Final Advanced Materials provides silicate fibre tapes with or without adhesive and are available in a width ranging from 10 to 300 mm. Depending on their level of silicon dioxide, silicate fibre textiles can have different physical, mechanical and thermal properties. Different declinations of the silicate fibre are therefore proposed for silicate fibre tapes.

Which high-temperature tape should I choose for the thermal insulation of an exhaust?

Whether for insulation or protection applications, high-temperature tapes are frequently used in the industry, on manifolds, tubes and exhausts. Final Advanced Materials produces fibreglass tapes with excellent insulating properties up to 550°C, and basalt fibre tapes which combine insulation and thermal stability up to 700°C and also have a natural bronze colour without treatment. These tapes can be coated with silicone to meet sealing needs.


Basalt fibre tape or single-filament ceramic tape: which material should I choose?

Basalt fibres and ceramic fibres are inorganic fibres which are resistant to very high temperatures: 700°C and 1,100°C respectively. They are used in the industry or the aeronautics sector for insulation and protection applications, primarily thermal protection. Both these fibres have excellent temperature resistance and effective thermal and electrical insulation. The temperature they will be exposed to is the main factor determining the choice of tape. If it is lower than 700°C, we recommend a basalt fibre tape which is more cost-effective.


What is the abrasion resistance of high-temperature fibreglass tapes?

Like most inorganic fibres, high-temperature fibreglass tapes are sensitive to abrasion. Final Advanced Materials offers tapes with surface treatments to improve this resistance. Certain coatings, such as silicone, also make the material waterproof, while others, like vermiculite, increase short-term temperature resistance or reduce slag formation.
