High Temperature Zirconia Loose Fibres 2,300 °C
Zirconia Loose Fibres, up to 2,300 °C
Loose zirconia fibre ZYBF exists in three different types. Depending on their form, these fibres can withstand operating temperatures up to 2,200 °C and peak temperatures up to 2 300 °C. This polycrystalline material is stabilised by 10 % of yttrium oxide. Loose fibres can then be moulded under vacuum into rigid elements, used in cavities as loose insulators or added as a reinforcement to ceramic parts and coatings.

Manufacturing of Loose Zirconia Fibres
All three ZYBF types are made using the original Zircar Process by Zircar Zirconia. This process uses microphagia to transforms an organic fibre into a ceramic fibre.
ZYBF is 6 to 10 µm in diameter and is nearly 100% zirconia phase stabilised with 10 % yttria. The yttria stabilises the tetragonal / cubic structure by preventing the monoclinic to tetragonal crystal transformation that occurs at 1,170 °C in pure un-stabilised or insufficiently stabilised zirconia. This undesirable transformation causes an 11 % volume change in the crystal unit cell size that can cause micro-cracking and reduced physical strength in the bulk solid.
Yttria stabilised zirconia is an electrical semiconductor at high temperatures. This conductivity arises from the different valences of ionic Zr4+ and Y3+. Electricity is conducted at elevated temperatures (700 to 800 °C) as oxygen ions are induced to flow through the stabilised zirconia structure. This phenomenon forms the basis of zirconia oxygen sensors.
